Where to buy a burner phone in the US (and how to pay for it)

In the US you can buy a burner phone at Walmart, Best Buy, most pharmacy chains and prepaid carrier stores: pick a prepaid, no-contract phone with the SIM already in the box and pay cash. We build Teal VPN, and we think the phone matters far less than how you activate and carry it.

Teal VPN Updated

Paying cash only removes the purchase record. How you activate and carry the phone decides how separate it really is.

Walmart, Best Buy and prepaid carrier stores all sell burner phones

Any prepaid, no-contract phone sold off the shelf is a burner phone, so in the US the easiest places to buy one are Walmart, Best Buy, pharmacy chains, prepaid carrier stores and the phone rack at larger gas stations.

Walmart runs a whole page titled 'Burner phones with a prepaid SIM already installed', and Best Buy groups its no-contract phones under one category (as of 7 November 2026). The shelf exists even if nobody in the store uses the word burner.

Our pick is a big-box store with self-checkout. The SIM is in the box, the price is printed on the shelf, and nobody asks your name.

How to buy a burner phone for cash in five steps

Pick a prepaid phone with the SIM in the box, pay cash for the phone and the airtime card, and activate it away from your home connection and your main phone.

  • Check that the carrier on the box has coverage where you will use the phone
  • Bring enough cash for the phone and at least one airtime card
  • Leave your main phone at home or switch it off before you go in
  • Decide whether you need data at all; a calls-and-texts phone is cheaper and simpler
  • Have a fresh email address ready for any activation form that asks for one
  1. Choose the phone type

A basic flip or bar phone is enough for calls and texts. If you want apps, maps or a VPN on it, pick a cheap prepaid Android phone from the same rack.

  2. Pay cash at the till

Skip the loyalty account, skip the emailed receipt and take the paper one. A debit purchase links the phone to your bank the moment you tap.

  3. Buy the airtime separately

Prepaid refill cards sit next to the phones. Paying for refills in cash means the carrier account never holds a bank card in your name.

  4. Activate away from home

Most carriers activate online using the number printed on the SIM package. Do it from a café or library connection, with your usual phone left at home.

  5. Keep it apart from your life

Never sign into your real email, social or banking accounts on the burner. One login undoes everything the cash purchase gave you.

A burner phone is just a prepaid phone you plan to drop

A burner phone is a cheap prepaid phone, with a prepaid SIM, that you use for a short time and then stop using. There is no special product; the word describes how you buy and use it, not what is in the box.

Proton VPN makes the point most buyers miss: the SIM matters as much as the handset. A phone bought with cash but activated with your usual SIM is simply your phone in a new case.

People buy them to list something on a marketplace, to date without handing out a real number, to keep client calls separate, to travel with a local number, or to attend a one-off event with a phone they can afford to lose. A popular r/privacy thread asks how anyone actually buys 'these mythical' phones; the honest answer is that it is the plain prepaid phone on the Walmart rack.

A burner phone without a burner SIM does little to protect your privacy.

Burner app or physical phone: which one to buy

Buy a physical phone when the number must be separate from your identity; use a burner-number app when you only want a second number on your usual phone for listings or dating.

A burner-number app runs on your real phone, bills your real payment method and knows your real number, so the app company can link the two in seconds. A physical burner has its own IMEI and SIM, but it costs more, needs its own airtime, and is one more thing to charge.

A physical burner phone

  • Separate handset, SIM and carrier account
  • Can be bought and topped up with cash
  • Works without your main phone nearby
  • Lost or broken, it costs the price of the phone

A burner-number app

  • Lives on your everyday phone
  • Paid through your app store account
  • Provider holds your real number and the temporary one
  • Fine for Craigslist, dating and short projects, weak for real separation

A burner phone can still be traced four ways

Cash buys you a phone that is not in your name; it does not buy you a phone that cannot be traced.

The carrier logs the handset's IMEI and the SIM against every tower it talks to, so the phone's movements are on record from the first call. The store has video of the purchase. Anyone you call from the burner connects it to your circle. And carrying it next to your usual phone pairs the two in the tower records, day after day.

Norton's list of ways a burner can be traced comes to the same thing: the device, the number and the usage each leave a trail. Cash only removes the purchase record.

Does a burner phone need a VPN

Only if the burner has data and you browse on it; a VPN does nothing for calls and texts, which the carrier sees either way.

Teal VPN, made by Fxolio LLC, has a Free plan (500 MB a day on 2 devices, no account details beyond an email) and a Pro plan, with apps for Android, Android TV, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook. Teal Secure obfuscates every connection on every plan, and the app tries other routes by itself when a network closes one; we keep no browsing logs. Two honest limits: there is no iPhone app as of November 2026, so a cheap Android burner is the one we can cover, and no VPN is guaranteed to connect on every network.

Teal Pro costs $7.99 a month, $24 for six months or $36 a year ($3 a month), with a 30-day money-back window and payment by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or crypto. After connecting, open tealvpn.com/ip-leak-test on the burner to confirm the public IP and DNS servers shown belong to the VPN, not the carrier.

Using the burner safely and getting rid of it

Treat the burner as a stranger's phone: no real accounts, no contacts copied from your main phone, no photos of your face, and when you are done, wipe it and pull the SIM.

How long it lasts is set by the airtime, not the hardware. Prepaid balances expire if you stop topping up, which is convenient when the point is to let the number die.

  1. Keep it switched off at home

Power it on only where you plan to use it. A phone that sleeps at your address every night is registered to your address in all but name.

  2. Never sign in with anything real

No Google account you already use, no app store login tied to your card, no cloud backup. A fresh email is the only account the phone should know.

  3. Factory reset before disposal

Wipe the phone from its own settings menu so texts, call lists and any app data are gone before it leaves your hands.

  4. Remove and cut the SIM

The SIM carries the number and the carrier account. Snap it, then dispose of it separately from the handset.

  5. Recycle it away from home

Drop the handset at an electronics recycling point or a retailer's take-back bin rather than your own kerbside bin.

Questions

Where can I buy a burner phone near me?

The nearest Walmart, Best Buy, pharmacy chain or prepaid carrier store. Search their sites for 'prepaid phones' or 'no-contract phones' rather than 'burner'; Walmart is the one that actually uses the word on its site.

Can I buy a burner phone with cash?

Yes, at any physical store that sells prepaid phones. Buy the airtime refill card with cash too, so the carrier account never holds your bank details.

Are burner phones legal to buy?

Buying a prepaid phone is an ordinary retail purchase in the US; it is what you do with the phone that matters. Some countries require ID to activate a SIM, so check the local rules before you travel.

How long does a burner phone last?

As long as the prepaid airtime, plus whatever grace period the carrier allows. Stop topping up and the number lapses, which is usually the point.

Can you tell if someone is using a burner phone?

Not from the number alone. A prepaid number looks like any other; the only hint is a number that appears briefly and then goes dead.

Is a burner phone traceable?

Yes. The carrier logs the handset and SIM against cell towers, the store has video of the purchase, and carrying it next to your usual phone links the two. Cash removes the purchase record, nothing else.

Can I use Teal VPN on a burner phone?

On an Android burner, yes. Teal Free needs only an email address and gives 500 MB a day; there is no iPhone app as of November 2026.
